Bayse is deeply rooted in the Golden Era of 90s Hip Hop. The Affiliation with Germanys Oldschool leads to early releases on pioneering Rap Label 360° Records / Advanced Chemistry.
It all started with Graffiti and the love for Rap Music. As years pass by, the passion for Lettering ends up in a diploma in Graphic Design, and the Rapper Bayse evolves into a producer and sound designer.
Moving to Berlin in 2010 shifts the musical focus, forced by the Sound Studies at the Universität der Künste Berlin. Inspired by lectures of Robert Henke (of Monolake fame / founder of Ableton Live) the interest for Electronic Music leads to a production style, which combines the raw dancefloor aesthetics of the B-Boy stance with Soundscapes, that explore the sonic vocabulary of computer music.

Aktueller Anlass ist natürlich Black Swan, ein toller Film, finde ich. Auch die Teaser-Filmplakate vom UK Designbüro La Boca sind top.

Theophilus London – TNT

Theophilus London – kommt aus Brooklyn – “Hipster-Rap” – Schublade zu. Wenn man sie aufmacht, hört man Disco- und Pop-anleihen der 80er, Samples von Kraftwerk oder Whitney Houston, deepe House-music und halt Theophilus am Mic. Mit Produktionen von Mark Ronson oder der Winehouse-staff ist genug Potential da, um Mainstream zu gehen. London wohnt in musikalischer Nachbarschaft zu Kid Cudi oder Kanye. Wer offen für deren experimentellere Arbeiten ist, fühlt sich hier aight.

Die Songs sind alle sehr cool und haben deswegen auch immer einen dicken Mantel aus Zucker-pop an. Auf mein Ohr wirkt das oft überproduziert; Popsongs mit klirrenden Höhen skip ich schnell mal weg. Die Theophilus-Tracks, die ‘ne gewisse Rawness haben und nicht so fricklig-glatt gemixt sind, find ich am besten.

‘Accept the new’ (produziert von Dam-Funk) und ‘TNT’ als erster Fix; Theo bietet jedoch bei größerem Interesse 3 Mixtapes zum Download an: Jam, I Want you und This Charming Mixtape. Das “I want you’”-Mixtape auf jeden Fall die Empfehlung des Hauses. You officially been updated.

Dark Night of the Soul ist eine Kollaboration vom Grammy-prämierten Produzenten Danger Mouse (of Gnarls Barkley fame) und Sparklehorse’s Mark Linkous. Ein großartiges Album mit Gästen wie The Flaming Lips, The Strokes, Pixies, Iggy Pop, The Cardigans, Suzanne Vega oder David Lynch. Lynch ist auch für das gesamte Artwork verantwortlich; das obige Video mit Stuff der DNOTS-Produktion wurde gerade veröfentlicht.

“The book package includes the full sequence of Lynch’s images, a foreword by Danger Mouse, selected lyrics, and an art-printed CD-R, in a run of only 5000 copies, each individually numbered.”  → Amazon

Um das Album rankt sich viel Trivia: zum Beispiel gab es Riesen-stress wegen irgendwelchem Copyright-Kram. Das Album wurde vom Label nicht veröfentlicht, und Dangermouse hat das Booklet mit ‘ner leeren CD drin dann do-it-yourself-mäßig rausgebracht. Beigepackt war die Aufforderung, sich die Musik selbst aus dem Netz zu holen. Do it. Weniger erfreulich: Sparklehorse’s Mark Linkous hat sich während der Aufnahmen zum Album das Leben genommen. Lynch-esque.

Erwähnenswert ist noch die großartige Website, lang nicht mehr sowas liebevoll gestaltetes im Web gesehen. Unbedingt aushecken. Nach dem Klick gibt’s noch ein paar Fotos von Lynch, die momentan die Wanderausstellungsrunde in den Staaten machen.
